🔴 [Analyst view] Tesla unveils new-generation Semi heat pump and electric drive system
Summary: Not a Tesla App reports that Tesla has started mass production of the new Semi in Sparks, Nevada, and at the launch event, Engineering Vice President Lars Moravy and Semi Program Director Dan Priestley presented technical details of the production version's thermal management system, electric drive unit, and electric steering.
Content summary:
Tesla held a launch event this week in Sparks, Nevada, announcing the start of mass production of the new Semi; Engineering Vice President Lars Moravy and Semi Program Director Dan Priestley attended and gave technical presentations.
The new Semi features a new-generation heat pump called Megamanifold, which can simultaneously run cabin air conditioning and heating and cooling for the entire powertrain; Tesla's official Semi account says it can recover waste heat from the powertrain for cabin heating.
Because it was developed concurrently with the Cybercab, the Semi and Cybercab share a core thermal management architecture; Tesla says "one thermal management system serves both the most efficient model and the largest model."
The production electric drive unit replaces the early prototype's carbon-fiber-wrapped rotor with a steel-cage rotor, which Tesla says is cheaper, more reliable, and more efficient; the stator uses a bar-winding design shared with the Cybertruck, allowing reuse of the existing supply chain and reducing costs.
The production Semi eliminates traditional hydraulic power steering in favor of fully electric power steering derived from the Cybertruck's 48-volt architecture; Tesla says it is the first heavy truck to use electric steering, eliminating the hydraulic compressor and hydraulic fluid.
The average fully loaded energy consumption announced at the event is about 1,700 Wh/mile; fuel cost data shared at the event shows that diesel operating costs have fluctuated between 0.50 and 0.80 dollars per mile over the past few years, while the Semi's electricity cost has remained stable in the 0 dollars per mile range (the original data is truncated here).

🟡 [Analyst take] Electrek long-form: Tesla Optimus weekly production rises to hundreds of units, but the robot still cannot generalize
Summary: Electrek, citing a report from The Information, says Tesla has raised weekly production of its Optimus humanoid robot to hundreds of units at its Fremont factory, roughly 10 times the level of Q2, but the robots coming off the line still cannot handle general-purpose tasks.
Content summary:
The Information's report shows that during Tesla's small-batch testing phase in Q2, only dozens of Optimus units were produced per week, rising to hundreds per week by August. Management's goal is to build a continuous automated production line before the end of the year, achieving capacity of more than 1,000 units per week, with an eventual target of about 20,000 units per week. The line is located where the Model S and Model X were previously produced; Tesla discontinued those two flagship models in early May, moving workers and engineers from the S/X and Model Y programs to the robot program.
Most Optimus units are currently used for internal testing, training and data collection. Robots working inside Tesla's factories are confined to controlled, supervised areas and programmed for specific tasks rather than operating as general-purpose machines. The V3 version currently in production is not the version planned for commercialization; the latter still needs to pass stricter durability and reliability thresholds.
The report describes that Optimus's hands and forearms contain more than 100 screws and small components, and workers still assemble them by hand. Fixtures at multiple workstations, including those for hands, joints and electronics testing, cannot consistently align parts that are smaller and have tighter tolerances than auto parts, resulting in more robots needing rework after coming off the line. Some hand tactile sensors have reliability issues, and Tesla plans to add replaceable "sensing gloves" next year to avoid replacing the entire hand.
Tesla relies on external suppliers (many in China) for precision gears for motors and actuated joints. Some suppliers can make qualified parts at prototype volumes but struggle to maintain consistent quality at higher production volumes. Three people familiar with the system told The Information that Optimus's AI still cannot reliably handle a wide range of tasks and behaves unpredictably in situations it has not been trained on. Tesla is trying to build a library of basic motions so the robot can recombine them for new jobs, but Optimus reportedly still needs several days to learn even basic tasks.
Tesla already has more than 500,000 hours of training data and aims to double that before the end of the year. The company has moved most of its autonomous driving data annotation team to the Optimus program, hired dedicated data collectors who wear camera helmets and motion-capture suits, and set up training centers in Colorado, Arizona and Florida. Tesla plans to offer Optimus to a small number of factories and warehouses similar to its own on a lease rather than sale basis, and use deployment data to improve the AI. Musk said in January, 2025 that about 10,000 Optimus units would be produced that year, with "thousands" doing useful work before the end of the year; a year later he admitted that zero Optimus robots were doing useful work at Tesla. He also promised to unveil V3 in mid-2026, but as of late September that demonstration had not yet happened. XPeng launched an automated production line for its IRON humanoid robot in Guangzhou this month, targeting commercial sales in 2027.

🔴 [Media report] Tesla Semi enters mass production, new Nevada factory annual capacity 50 thousand units
Summary: Electrek reports that Tesla started high-volume production at its Nevada Semi factory on the evening of September 24, with the company saying the factory has an annual capacity of 50 thousand units, deliveries "starting now," and posting 13 posts on X revealing the redesigned Semi.
Content summary:
Tesla held a launch event on the evening of September 24 at its Semi factory in Sparks, Nevada, located next to Gigafactory Nevada and covering 1.8 million square feet; the first production vehicle rolled off the line this April, and Tesla calls it "our first factory built for the Semi."
The Semi was unveiled in 2017 and was originally scheduled to enter production in 2019, a delay of seven years to date; Tesla says the Standard, Long Range, and European-spec versions are built on the same production line.
The battery switched from 2170 cells to Tesla's in-house 4680 cells; Tesla says "less battery mass, fewer kWh, no compromise on range," but did not disclose the new battery pack capacity; the final specs announced this February are Standard Range 325 miles and Long Range 500 miles at 82,000 pounds, with energy consumption of 1.7 kWh/mile.
The drive unit switched to a steel-cage rotor, with a bar-wound stator shared with the Cybertruck; the Semi is the first heavy-duty truck to adopt electric steering, which Tesla says "lays the foundation for future autonomous driving"; thermal management uses the same "Megamanifold" heat pump system as the Cybercab.
Tesla says the Semi fleet's uptime exceeded 98% in 2026, and that Megacharger can add back up to 60% range in 30 minutes; Megacharger sites are concentrated in California, Texas, and the East Coast, with large gaps in the Mountain West and Plains.
Tesla did not confirm pricing at the event; Electrek previously reported that Tesla quoted 290 thousand dollars for the 500-mile version of the Semi, and about 260 thousand dollars for the Standard Range.
Customer vehicles at the event bore logos including PepsiCo, DHL, US Foods, ABF, Einride, IMC Logistics, and WattEV; earlier this week, the ZET SCALE coalition selected Tesla as the primary supplier for 2,500 electric trucks, and Einride placed an order for 500 units on August.
